Wow... what a feeling Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium! Our team came back from a 17-13 deficit in the 4th quarter to beat the Beavers of Oregon State. Our first conference win feels awesome, and the way we did it feels twice as good. Our team showed determination, belief, confidence, and a will to win. There were at least two or three times when we could have rolled over and quit, but we didn't. That proves to me, and hopefully all of you, that this team is heading in the right direction and has improved every week in at least one aspect of our game.
Saturday it was Delvon Flowers, Mike Karney, and the entire offensive line dominating the Beaver defense. Previously it had been our aerial attack that led us to victories over our non-conference foes. If we can continue to dominate the line of scrimmage and run the ball effectively, the passing game will benefit immensely, and we will have a lot of success in the coming weeks.
This week the #13/11 Washington Huskies come into Sun Devil Stadium for a meeting with the Devils. Washington held on last week and beat the U of A with a rushing touchdown by Cody Pickett with only 13-seconds remaining in the game. Pickett threw for a UW school record 455 yards in the 31-28 Husky victory.
Our defense will no doubt be tested through the air. The secondary has been doing a nice job of defending the pass and have forced teams to try to run the ball (which is hard to do against us) or get off quick, shorter passes before Terrell, Al Williams, Willie Daniel, Mason Unck, and others, get through the line and hit the QB.
This game gives us the opportunity to improve our home record to 5-0 and remain unbeaten at Sun Devil Stadium. The Huskies are a tough team for anyone to play, but they are no less beatable than the Beavers were. The more people in the stands wearing gold the better. The fans that have been to previous home games this year can attest to the fact that we come to play every night...but especially at home. Bring your headsets and listen to the World Series from the stands if you must, but please come out and support us. We have the opportunity to move to 5-2, and within one win of becoming bowl eligible for the third straight year.
This is a huge game for us and we need the whole Sun Devil family to give us home field advantage. We'll see you all on Saturday at 7:15pm.
- 1) Congrats to Delvon Flowers who becomes one of only 19 Sun Devils to ever rush for more than 200 yards in a game, and who officially stepped out of J.R. Redmond's shadow for good.
2) Congrats to the D'backs on a great season, and good luck in the World Series!
3) The Sun Devil offense ranks 2nd in the Pac and 6th in the nation in total offense. The defense ranks 2nd in the Pac in sacks.
4) The Devils' special teams rank in the Top 3 in the Pac-10 in Net Punting, Kickoff Returns, and Field Goals.
