Beavers Come Home To Face Utah
Oct. 23, 2001
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26
Utah at Oregon State, 5 p.m.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27
Oregon State Alumni Meet, 9 a.m.
Oregon State (0-2 overall duals, 0-1 Pacific-10 duals) will take Homecoming literally, as the Beavers return to their own pool to meet Utah (0-0, 0-0 Mountain West) in OSU's home-opener at Stevens Natatorium.
'We're looking for a win, especially after last week left a little bit of a bad taste for us,' said OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny, whose team fell at California-Santa Barbara and to No. 6 UCLA on Oct. 19. 'We thought we were capable of beating UCSB and we came up short. We had some good races, now we're looking to repeat those and improve in the areas where we were lacking last week.'
Utah also opened its season last weekend, placing second in the eight-team Colorado State Early Bird Invitational. The Utes trailed only the host Rams in the meet.
'It will be a good meet and good competition,' Podkoscielny said. 'Utah has a very well-rounded team ... the trend in the NCAA with most of the teams we swim against is that as we improve, they improve. Comparing us with the teams we've swam against for the past five years, we've all been taking the same steps.'
In Podkoscielny's five years at OSU, the Beavers have posted a 3-2 mark against Utah, that includes splitting two dual meets last season in Salt Lake City. The Beavers know they'll need to improve over last week's performance to earn their first dual meet win of the season.
'We're looking for some breakthrough swims this weekend, especially from our freshmen,' Podkoscielny said. 'And we hope to perform well for Homecoming.'
After meeting Utah early Friday evening, the Beavers will hold their annual Alumni Meet on Saturday morning at Stevens Natatorium. For more information on the Alumni Meet, call the OSU Women's Swimming Office at (541) 737-1075 or (541) 737-7492.
ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time dual meet record of 4-5 against Utah in a series dating back to 1981. The Beavers are on a 1-meet winning streak against the Utes after splitting a pair of duals in Salt Lake City last season, Utah won the first dual 120-101 and OSU bounced back for a 153-126 victory the next day. The last meeting in Corvallis was a 124-107 Beaver win during the 1999-2000 season.
LAST WEEK: Oregon State was beaten by sixth-ranked UCLA 167-93 in a Pacific-10 dual meet and was edged by California-Santa Barbara 136-124 in a non-league dual as the women's swimming season began the afternoon of Oct. 19 at Santa Barbara, Calif.
At UCSB, the Beavers' meet with the host Gauchos came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. OSU led most of the way but was outtouched at the finish.
'It was an awesome relay,' Oregon State head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'It went okay. We swam well, but we lost both meets ... it was disappointing to lose, especially against UCSB, but we had a lot of great performances and swam against some of the top competition in the nation, so it was a great experience.'
Naya Higashijima captured 3 events against both the Bruins and the Gauchos, swimming the best times she's ever recorded in an 'unrested' meet, that is, one in which the Beavers didn't ease off on their training prior to competing. Higashijima took the 1,000 freestyle in 10 minutes, 18.22 seconds, the 200 butterfly in 2:01.77 and the 500 freestyle in 4:59.01.
Returning All-American Birte Steven won the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke in both duals. Steven took the 100 breast in 1:03.89 and the 200 breast in 2:16.79.
Kristin Huston highlighted the performance of OSU's strong freshman class, swimming 3 lifetime bests, that included wins in the 100 freestyle against both UCLA and UCSB in 52.79 and a victory against the Gauchos in the 50 freestyle in 24.35. Suzanne Starkey added the Beavers' other victory on the day, taking the 100 butterfly against UCSB in 58.26.
HEAD COACH MARIUSZ PODKOSCIELNY: Mariusz Podkoscielny is in his sixth season as head coach at Oregon State. Since taking over the Beaver program at the start of the 1996-97 season, Podkoscielny's teams have a dual meet record of 21-32 overall and 2-15 in the Pacific-10.
Podkoscielny, 33, is a nine-time All-American and 2-time Olympian. Prior to coming to OSU in the fall of 1996, Podkoscielny had been an assistant men's and women's coach at Arizona since 1993.
A native of Gdansk, Poland, Podkoscielny was a member of the Arizona swim team from 1988-92 and was one of the fastest distance swimmers in UA history. He was also on the Polish National Team from 1980-92 and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics.
STEVENS NATATORIUM: Oregon State swims its home meets at Stevens Natatorium on the OSU campus. The Beavers have an all-time record of 5-3 in the pool.
Stevens Natatorium is adjacent to Dixon Recreation Center, near Gill Coliseum. The pool opened in 1994 but was not outfitted for competition until prior to the 1999-2000 season.
OSU had scheduled its home meets at Corvallis' Osborn Aquatic Center since the community pool opened for the 1979-80 season. A few meets were still held on campus at Langton Pool.
