Cross Country Takes On Field of Pac-10 Rivals

The Meet: The University of Arizona will send the men's and women's cross country teams to Scottsdale, Ariz. for the Pac-10 Championships on Sat., Oct. 27. Arizona State will host the meet at the Pavilion Lakes Golf Course. The men's 8K race is set to take off at 10:00 a.m. MST. The women's 6K will follow at 11:00 a.m. MST. The men will run against seven other Pac-10 rivals, and the women will compete against eight other teams.
Who's going: Arizona will take seven men and seven women to compete in the varsity races. The Wildcats will also have runners in the 'B Team' race. The men's varsity team will include: Mark Anderson, Mike Cramer, Kevin Engelhardt, Kyle Goklish, Matt McInvale, Tom Prindiville, and Steve Smith. Varsity runners for the women will be: Kim Bates, Jennifer Burris, Tara Chaplin, Erin Doherty, Nicole Gurnicz, Beth Hoge, and Abby Peters.
On the men's side: The Wildcat men continue to look for a consistent leader this season. The number one spot has been occupied by junior Kyle Goklish, freshman Mark Anderson, and senior Steve Smith. Senior Mike Cramer has been a constant in the team's number two spot. Senior Tom Prindiville is also a consistent face seen in the top five for the Wildcats. Sophomore Matt McInvale has also been a factor in the scoring for the Cats. Also making an impact on this year's team are: junior Eric Bohn, senior Thomas Opio, sophomore Kevin Engelhardt, and sophomore Wade Juntunen.
As for the women: Senior Tara Chaplin continues to be a very effective leader for this year's squad. She placed 3rd at the Roy Griak Invitational and 1st at the Murray Keatinge Invitational. Following her has been sophomore Beth Hoge and senior Erin Doherty. Rounding out a consistent top five for the Wildcats are senior Jennifer Burris and junior Kim Bates. Other Wildcats who continue to add to Arizona's strength are: junior Nicole Gurnicz, sophomore Andrea Schwartz, junior Cara Cline, and junior Harisimran Khalsa.
Last meet: The men's cross country team last competed at the Pre-NCAA Invitational. They placed fifth in their division of 37 teams. They were led by senior Steve Smith's 17th-place finish. The women did not compete in the Pre-NCAA meet due to illness among some of the runners. The women's team has not seen competition since its victory at the Murray Keatinge Invitational.
