Women's Basketball to Hold Mid-Morning Madness Saturday, Nov. 3
Oct. 23, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Pac-10 defending champion Arizona State women's basketball team will play host to its fifth annual 'Mid-Morning Madness' Saturday, Nov. 3 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Instead of participating in the traditional 'Midnight Madness' which kicks off the first official practice of the college basketball season, the Sun Devils will hold their tip-off event from 9 to 11 a.m. that morning. Admission is free, and there will be free breakfast and T-shirts for the first 500 fans.
Fans are invited to meet the team, get autographs and take photos with their favorite Sun Devils as well as participate in trivia and skills contests throughout the morning.
'Mid-Morning Madness is a lot of fun for our fans,' ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. 'Because we are holding this event in the morning and not late at night, our fans, especially the younger ones, won't miss a thing. Our fans will be able to get reacquainted with the players who helped us win our first ever Pac-10 championship last year and meet the new players who look to carry on that winning Sun Devil tradition.'
Already ranked 17th in the country in several preseason polls, Arizona State will return four starters and seven letterwinners from its 2001 Pac-10 Championship squad including its top four scorers and top five rebounders from one year ago. First-team All-Pac-10 selections Melody Johnson and Amanda Levens as well as Pac-10 All-Freshman team selection Betsy Boardman are among the returning starters for ASU in 2001-02.
Arizona State opens the 2001-02 season with exhibition games against Slavyanka, a team from Chelyabinsk, Russia, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, and against Delta Kosice (Slovakia) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils tip off the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 17 against St. Peter's at 2:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. That Nov. 17 game is part of an ASU sports tripleheader with the men's basketball team taking on Stephen F. Austin at 11:30 a.m. and the volleyball team taking on California at 7:30 p.m.
