UW Men's Hoop Schedule Features 11 Games vs. NCAA Tournament Teams

Oct. 24, 2001

SEATTLE - The 2001-02 University of Washington men's basketball schedule features at least 12 contests against postseason teams from last year, including two games against NCAA runner-up Arizona, Coach Bob Bender announced Wednesday.

Arizona visits Seattle on Jan. 12 for a 7 p.m. game. The Wildcats are one of six 2001 NCAA Tournament participants that will visit Bank of America Arena at Edmundson Pavilion this season.

Washington plays 11 games against opponents that participated in the NCAA Tournament and also plays National Invitation Tournament competitor Texas-El Paso. Along with Arizona, the Huskies have two meetings each with Sweet 16 qualifiers Stanford, USC and UCLA.

Highlighting the non-conference home slate is a visit from three-time NCAA Sweet 16 participant Gonzaga on Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Two other NCAA Tournament teams, Butler and Mississippi, loom as potential opponents as Washington opens the season Nov. 15-18 at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Ak. Ole Miss is a potential second-round opponent in the Alaska tournament. The Rebels advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 last spring.

'We've got a great non-conference schedule that should prepare us for the Pac-10 season,' said Bender. 'We travel early and play quality people both here at home and on the road. We play non-conference games in pretty quick succession.'

For the first time since the 1990 season, the Huskies will play Pacific-10 Conference games before January to accommodate the Pac-10 Tournament. The top eight teams in the regular-season standings will compete in Los Angeles, Calif. for the conference championship and an automatic NCAA Tournament berth. The Pac-10 Tournament, which was previously held for four seasons from 1987-90, is scheduled for March 7-9 at the Staples Center.

'This is new territory for all of us who have been in the league a while. Before coming to the Pac-10 I've been involved with postseason conference tournaments,' Bender explained. 'It does require some adjustments, the biggest one being that we open the Pac-10 season before Christmas. Traditionally we've always begun after January 1. You have to be ready to play. You are going to be put in a position where you have to elevate everything so that come December you are playing closer to what you normally would play in January.'

Washington begins Pac-10 play on Dec. 20 against UCLA at 7:30 p.m. The Bruins lost their last four games against UW in Seattle, including a 96-94 decision on the final game of the 2001 season.

The Huskies tune up with two exhibition games, Nov. 2 against the Brisbane Capitals of the Australian professional league and Nov. 8 against Western Washington. Both exhibition games tip-off at 7 p.m. in Bank of America Arena.

After the three-game Alaska tournament, Washington returns to Seattle for its regular-season home opener against Santa Clara on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. That is followed by a visit from UNLV on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.

The Huskies registered a 10-20 record in 2001, tying for ninth place with a 4-14 Pacific-10 Conference mark.
