Four Cougars Undefeated During Day One Of ITA Regional

Stanford, Calif.-- Washington State women's tennis team, led by ranked players Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna, had four players go undefeated during the first day of competition at the Omni Hotels Western Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University.

Perkins, a No. 4 seed in her bracket, and McKenna, a No. 9 seed, both advanced with byes in the first round. In the second round, Perkins beat Kelly Ramirez of Fresno State, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Also in second round action, McKenna outlasted Oregon's Ester Bak, 6-1, 6-2.

Also advancing to the round of 32 were Cougars Nora Gaal and Zorana Roganovic. In second round play, Gaal outplayed Kathy Chi from rival Washington, 6-2, 6-1. Roganovic defeated Amy Allen of Washington in her second match, 6-0, 6-0.

'This is what our players have played for all fall,' said WSU Tennis Coach Cari Groce. 'This regional is packed with some of the best players in the country.'

The four-day tournament features the top women's players from the ITA's western region at the NCAA Division I level. Participating schools for this year's event include: Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford. The singles finalists and doubles champions advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 8-11 in Dallas, Texas.
