Men's Golf Tied For Second After First Round At Nelson Invitational

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a four-under 280 today and are currently tied for second after the first round of the Nelson Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. Florida Southern leads the field by one stroke with a five-under par 279. Rounding out the top five are Washington (280), Purdue (280), Toledo (283) and Texas Tech (283).

Purdue's Lee Williamson fired a five-under 66 today to claim the top spot on the individual leaderboard. He is followed by NC State's Jason Moon and Florida Southern's Steve Sokol who shot four-under 67. Rounding out the top five individuals are Duke's Leif Olson (68) and B.J. Pitzen (68).

The Cardinal were led by Philip Rowe who fired a two-under 69 today to tie for sixth. Rowe tallied seven birdies in the last 12 holes. Jim Seki (36-34) and Kevin Blue (36-34) shot a one-under 70 and are tied for 12th. Blake Mastalie shot an even par 71 on the afternoon and is tied for 25th. Ron Won shot a 78 and is tied for 75th.

Five Stanford golfers competed as individuals. Del DeWindt and Pat Phillips shot a four-over 75 and are tied for 58th while Ned Yetten shot a 76 and is tied for 63rd in the individual standings. George Downing shot a 78 and is tied for 75th while Brian Sinay shot an 82 and is 81st.

Second round action continues tomorrow at the Stanford Golf Course.
