Men's Soccer Handed 4-0 Setback By No. 4 Stanford
Oct. 26, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - -
Oregon State suffered a 4-0 setback at No. 4 Stanford on Friday night in Pacific-10 men's soccer action.
OSU entered the match having won five of its last seven games, including a 1-0 win over UCLA last Sunday in Corvallis, but the Cardinal proved to be too much on its home pitch, as OSU fell to 5-7-0 (1-2-0 Pac-10) and Stanford upped its record to 12-1-0 (2-1-0).
OSU fell behind early when Johanes Maliza lofted a shot over OSU's Pac-10 saves leader Peter Billmeyer for an early 1-0 lead at the 8:47 mark. Both Derek Shanahan and Roger Levesque assisted on the play.
Two more Stanford shots found the back of the net before the first half came to a close, as Taylor Graham headed in a pass from Darren Ferandez in the 33rd minute and Roger Levesque assisted Derek Shanahan's score in the 38th minute to salt away the win.
Todd Dunivant put the final score home at 53:47 on a penalty kick.
OSU's normally potent offense was held in check Friday night by a Stanford squad that has now posted eight shutouts while surrendering just six goals in 13 games. Entering the night's contest, the Beavers averaged 2.57 goals over their last seven games.
Billmeyer added to his impressive season saves total with three on the evening, giving him 70 for the 2001 campaign.
The Beavers will look to regroup when they take on California in a 2 p.m., match this Sunday in Berkeley.
