Trojans Earn 1-0 Win At Oregon State
Oct. 26, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ali Fennell scored the lone goal Friday at 34:45 as the No. 21 USC Trojans defeated the Oregon State Beavers, 1-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at Lorenz Field. The goal came during a scramble in front of the net as Fennell was able to tuck a pass underneath Oregon State goalkeeper Jo Fletcher.
USC improves to 8-4-1 overall on the season and 3-1 in Pac-10 Conference play while Oregon State falls to 7-7-1 overall, 0-5 in Pac-10 play.
Senior Shaelyn Fernandes made three saves to record her fourth shutout of the season and move into second place on USC's all-time list with 10 career shutouts.
'The team battled hard today and played the type of soccer that it takes to get a Pac-10 win on the road,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'There are not many bad teams in the conference and we did a good job of defending and not giving quality chances.'
Sophomore defender Amanda Roach left the match in the first half after an injury and was replaced by senior defender Liane Nakano in the 35th minute. The Women of Troy were already playing without freshman forward Shannon Cross, who was lost for the season last week after suffering a tear in her medial meniscus in her right knee.
'We are not as deep without Roach and Cross and other kids will have to step up,' said Millinder. 'Our freshmen have stepped up for us. We are getting the results because of our depth and the fact we are doing the right things on the field.'
The Beavers outshot the Trojans by a 14-13 margin.
The Trojans will return to action this Sunday (Oct. 28) with a 1 p.m. match at Oregon.
