UW Men's Tennis Advances Three Players to Round of 32 at ITA Regional Championships

SANTA CLARA, Ca. -The Washington men's tennis team advanced three of its players to the round of 32 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Regional Championships. Ari Strasberg, along with two freshmen newcomers, Alex Vlaski and Pete Scharler were all victorious in their second round matches Friday evening.
Strasberg faced Pac-10 opponent Kevin Patrick of California and defeated the Golden Bear in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Vlaski went head-to-head with Thomas Burgemeister of Saint Mary's College and earned his first victory as a Husky with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Scharler made things look easy as he blanked Brett Bitzer of Nevada, 6-0, 6-0. Play will continue again Saturday morning.
In doubles action, the Huskies claimed two of three matches. The experienced duo of Ruby/Strasberg took on USF's Fuller/Pires de Almeida and defeated the pair, 8-1. Scharler and Vlaski teamed up to face Jones/Sheehan of Sac. State and claimed the match, 8-4.
The ITA National Championships will be held in Dallas, Texas on November 8-11. The Huskies open their regular season on January 25, 2002 with a home match against Portland.
