UW's Weiss Defeats Elvik to Advance to Second Round of ITA Regional Championships

SANTA CLARA, Ca. - Washington men's tennis player Nick Weiss (Santa Monica, Calif.) defeated USF's Axel Elvik (6-4, 6-7, 7-6) to advance to the second round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Regional Championships on the campus of Santa Clara University. Weiss will face Conor Niland of Cal in the second round of play.
The only other member of the Husky tennis team to play in the first round was freshman Scott Felsenthal (Memphis, Tenn.) who was defeated by Portland's Quinn Borchard in two sets, (7-5, 6-0).
All three Husky duos had byes in the first round of doubles action. Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg will pair up again to face the winner of the Fuller/Pires de Almeida vs. Illic/Sinn match. Weiss and Felsenthal will play together as well as newcomers Peter Scharler and Alex Vlaski.
The ITA National Championships will be held in Dallas, Texas on November 8-11. The Huskies open their regular season on January 25, 2002 with a home match against Portland.
