Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker To USC, 1-0
Oct. 26, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's women's soccer team suffered another heartbreaking loss on Friday afternoon as the Beavers dropped a tightly contested 1-0 match against University of Southern California.
OSU had numerous opportunities to score throughout the game but was unable to capitalize. USC goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandez made a pair of first half saves on shots from Katie Henderson and USC's defense blocked several other Beaver attempts.
'This was another difficult and disappointing result,' commented OSU head coach Steve Fennah. 'We just need to take care of putting the ball in the back of the net.'
The lone goal of the afternoon came in a scramble for a loose ball in front of the Oregon State goal. Trojan midfielder Ali Fennell corralled the ball and knocked it into the net at the 34:45 mark for what proved to be the game-winner.
The Beavers had one of their best opportunities to score early in the second half when Henderson fired a shot off of Lindsey Beem's corner kick that was deflected to OSU's Stephanie Lucas. Lucas headed the ball toward the net from inside the box, but USC defended the ball perfectly, heading it back away from the goal.
OSU finished the match with a 14-13 advantage on shots.
Oregon State's overall record drops to 7-7-1 and 0-5-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference while USC improves to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference action.
'Again, we had a good performance and perhaps that's the toughest thing,' said Fennah. 'It's scandalous to say we've had six losses (in a row), but that's the nature of the game...sports can be cruel at times and I think we're testing that rule to the limit.'
The Beavers continue action on Sunday when they host No. 3 ranked UCLA. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
