Washington's cross-country squads each earned top-five finishes today at the 2001 Pac-10 Cross-Country Championships at Pavilion Lakes Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Husky women were fifth with 109 points, while the men placed fifth with 148 points.

Stanford captured both team titles, with the women winning with 27 points and the men finishing with 28 points. Stanford's Lauren Fleshman won the 6,000-meter women's race in 20:09, and the Cardinal's Grant Robinson took the 8,000-meter men's race in 24:04.

Freshman Lisa Gibbs was Washington's top finisher on the women's side, placing sixth in 20:56. On the men's side, senior Jason Fayant put in a stellar performance, finishing fourth in 24:17. Fayant's finish was the best by a Husky men's runner at the Pac-10 meet since Bruce McDowell placed fourth in 1988.

Husky senior Sabrina Monro, expected to compete for the Pac-10 title, was forced to drop out of the race at the two-mile mark due to a foot injury. Today's race marks the first time Monro has failed to finish first since placing second at the 2000 NCAA Championships in Ames, Iowa. The Montana City, Mont. native had won four consecutive races to open the 2001 season, her first at Washington since transferring from the University of Montana this past summer.

Washington runs next on Nov. 10 at the NCAA West Regional meet in Tuscon, Ariz., the final tune-up before the 2001 NCAA Championships on Nov. 19.

Complete results of both races are available at the official site of University of Washington athletics, www.gohuskies.com.
