Men's Crew Achieves Unprecedented Success At The Head Of The American
Oct. 27, 2001
Sacramento, Calif. - Stanford Men's Crew began the year with a fantastic showing at the Head of the American Regatta in Sacramento, CA. The weather on Lake Natoma was perfect for head racing with blue skies, temperatures in the mid seventies and a slight breeze. In the Open 8 event, the Cardinal raced to a nine-second margin of victory over their closest opponents. In the Collegiate Novice 8 event, both Stanford boats finished 1-2 in their race.
The story of the weekend had to be that of Fred Luminoso, a senior walk-on whose previous Stanford Athletics experience was with the Wrestling team. With only three weeks of experience, Fred spurred the Varsity Eight to a gold medal. After the race, junior Chris Jones noted, 'The results are encouraging as we begin the Fall Head racing. Our goal is to improve with each outing so this will serve as a good benchmark for us.'

I am eager to see them continue to grow and contribute to the Cardinal squad.'
