Injury-Riddled Men's Soccer Squad Blanked By Cal
Oct. 28, 2001
BERKELEY, Calif. - -
The Oregon State men's soccer team battled injuries, illness, and the California Bears on Sunday, and that combination proved to be too much for the Beavers (5-8-0, 1-3-0 Pac-10) to overcome as they fell 4-0 in Berkeley.
OSU hung in the game in the first half, trailing just 1-0 at the intermission after Cal's Chris Roner netted the first of two goals on the afternoon at the 21:53 mark.
Though the Beavers entered the weekend with midfielder Aaron McHardy, forward Kevin Atkinson, and goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer at the top of various Pac-10 statistical categories, OSU was unable to mount much of an offensive threat throughout the 90 minutes. The Beavs fired just two shots on the afternoon to California's 17 - nine of which were on goal.
'We had two very disappointing games on our road trip,' third-year coach Dana Taylor said of his squad's loss Sunday and on Friday to Stanford. 'Injuries and sickness played a major part. We just need to heal physically as well as emotionally. We need to come back stronger and be ready to rebound and take on Washington this weekend. This is what the Pac-10 is all about - now we're going to see what we're made of.'
Billmeyer saved five shots for the Beavers, but three more Bear shots found the back of the net in the second half, as Carl Acosta, Leo Krupnik and Chris Roner tallied goals.
Josh Saunders and Brian Walker combined for the shutout, with Saunders tending the net for 84 minutes.
OSU hosts Washington this Friday in a 1 p.m. match at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The game will be replayed by Fox SportsNet at a time to be determined.
