Martinez Still Alive After Day Three Of ITA Regional

Stanford, Calif.-- Washington State tennis player Chris Martinez won both of her matches Sunday and advanced to the consolation semifinals at the Omni Hotels Western Regional Tennis Championships hosted by Stanford University.
Martinez, a freshman, defeated Daniela Gheorge of Fresno State, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 16. Martinez then beat Stanford's Kara Guzman, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, in the quarterfinals to advance to Monday's semifinal.
Stacy McKenna, a No. 9 seed, lost to Chloe Carlotte of Fresno State, 1-6, 2-6, in the quarterfinals of the main draw.
In the consolation bracket, freshmen Zsofi Fodor and Orsi Sallai both lost in the consolation round of 16 Sunday.
The four-day tournament features the top women's players from the ITA's western region at the NCAA Division I level. Participating schools for this year's event include: Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford. The singles finalists and doubles champions advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 8-11 in Dallas, Texas.
