UA Soccer Falls to Washington State, 3-1
Oct. 28, 2001
Pullman, Wash. (Oct. 28) -- Behind another 10-save performance from senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti, the Arizona women's soccer team (5-9-1, 2-4-0 Pac-10) forced Washington State (7-6-0, 2-3-0 Pac-10) to come from behind for a 3-1 win in Pullman on Sunday.
After even play through most of the first half, Arizona gained the upper hand at 40:37 when freshman forward Vanesha Bailey, who ended up playing all three field positions during the match, converted a rebound from a Candice Wilks shot. The Wildcats carried that 1-0 lead into the break and continued to hold the Cougars scoreless through the first five minutes of the second half.
Turning on the pressure, Washington State pulled off all three of its goals in a nine-minute span early in the second half. The Cougars out-shot Arizona, 26-7, for the game.
'We were winning in the first half,' said second-year head coach Cathy Klein. 'We just played a poor second. The opportunities to win were there, but we didn't convert. Washington State played an outstanding second half.'
Wilks notched three of the Wildcats' shots, including two on-goal. Bailey, freshman forward Cassie Daniels, junior midfielder Tymarie Novak and senior forward Kristi Loroa had one shot apiece, with Bailey and Daniels nailing their shots on-goal. Monti's 10 saves marked her third double-digit-save performance of the season.
Arizona returns to Tucson next weekend to open a season-ending three-game homestand. The Wildcats take on No. 22 California on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m., then they face No. 6 Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. The Cats close their season on Friday, Nov. 9, against rival Arizona State at 7 p.m.
