Women's Soccer Upsets No. 3 Ranked UCLA, 2-1

Oct. 28, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University goalkeeper Jo Fletcher recorded a career-high 16 saves to help the women's soccer team upset No. 3 ranked UCLA, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

The victory ended a six-game slide for the Beavers (8-7-1, 1-5-0 Pac-10) and was their first win against UCLA since the 1995 season. The Bruins (13-2-0, 4-1-0 Pac-10) suffered just their second loss of the year and first in Pacific-10 Conference action.

'This is a huge win,' said OSU head coach Steve Fennah. 'You don't play the No. 2 team in the country and have it not be a huge win at anytime.'

OSU took a 1-0 lead into halftime after junior Katie Henderson tallied her seventh goal of the season at the 19:05 mark. Sophomore Courtney Carter set up Henderson's goal from 15 yards out, with a perfectly placed through-ball.

The Bruins attempted 14 shots in the opening half but Fletcher, who recorded seven saves in the period, made several diving stops to keep UCLA out of the net.

Oregon State added its second goal of the afternoon in the 83rd minute. Henderson took the ball up the right side and centered it for freshman Jillian Nicks who fired the ball from five yards out off the chest of sprawled UCLA keeper CiCi Peterson. Nicks controlled the ricochet and powered it past Peterson to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

With time running down, the Bruins had several attempts to score but Fletcher made a pair of spectacular saves and OSU's defenders blocked crucial attempts.

UCLA managed to cut the lead in half when Stacey Duncan scored from 15 yards out at the 87:12 mark.

The Bruins had another solid attempt to score with just 43 seconds remaining in the game but OSU cleared the ball at the line on a shot by Sarah-Gayle Swanson to preserve the victory.

Fletcher finished with nine saves in the second half while Peterson had three for the Bruins.

'Jo (Fletcher) is an outstanding goalkeeper, I don't think there is any doubt in that and we saw her at her very best today,' said Fennah.

UCLA had a 33-10 advantage in shots on the afternoon but Oregon State took advantage of its opportunities to score.

'It's a huge win because it's that win we've deserved in so many of the games we've seen here this year,' said Fennah. 'It's not a surprise we got a win, it could have happened Friday, it could have happened the week before, it could have happened anytime, but obviously it's a huge, huge step to get the win. It gives the players energy and excitement and it helps them believe in what we've been doing.'

The Beavers hit the road for a non-conference tilt against Sacramento State University on Thursday at 2 p.m.
