Oct. 29, 2001
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Stanford junior forward Johanes Maliza (Chicago, Ill.) has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 23-29, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday morning.
Maliza tallied five points in two Pac-10 victories over the weekend, as the Cardinal (13-1-0, 3-1-0 Pac-10) moved to the top of the conference standings. Maliza scored Stanford's first goal in a 4-0 win against Oregon State on Oct. 26 and followed that performance by scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 4-1 triumph over Washington two days later.
Maliza is tied for third on the club with five goals, and is fifth on the team with 12 points. He has played in 11 games for the Cardinal so far this season and has tallied two assists.
Stanford, ranked No. 3 in this week's NSCAA/adidas Top-25, hosts UCLA Friday night as Pac-10 action continues.
This is the first weekly honor for Maliza and Stanford's fourth Player of the Week honor all-time. Junior forward Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) was Player of the Week for Sept. 24-Oct. 1.
