Martinez Loses Consolation Final At ITA Regional Championship

Stanford, Calif.-- Washington State freshman Chris Martinez, the Cougars' only remaining player in competition, lost to Washington's Erin Hoe, 6-7, 2-6, 2-6, at the Omni Hotels Western Regional Tennis Championships hosted by Stanford University.
Hoe, seeded ninth in the tournament, defeated Martinez in the consolation final played Monday.Martinez beat Courtney Jantz of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the final.
Martinez, a freshman, won twice Sunday to advance to the semifinals. She defeated Daniela Gheorge of Fresno State, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 16. Martinez then beat Stanford's Kara Guzman, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, in the quarterfinals to advance to Monday's semifinal.
The four-day tournament features the top women's players from the ITA's western region at the NCAA Division I level. Participating schools for this year's event include: Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford. The singles finalists and doubles champions advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 8-11 in Dallas, Texas.
The Cougar Tennis team must wait until Wednesday to learn if any players will be invited to the 2001 National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas.
