Pac-10 Football Players of the Week (10/29/01)
Oct. 29, 2001
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Tailback Onterrio Smith of Oregon, cornerback Kris Richard of USC and kicker John Anderson of Washington have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Smith, a sophomore from Sacramento, Calif., led Oregon to a 24-17 upset win at No. 14-ranked Washington State. He rushed 26 times for an Oregon-record 285 yards (11.0-yard average) and three touchdowns of 8, 41 and 73 yards. The 73-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning score. Smith's 285 yards rushing is an Oregon single-game record, surpassing the previous record of 249 yards by Bobby Moore/Ahmad Rashad in 1971. It also ranks as the eighth-best single-game rushing performance in Pac-10 history. Smith also returned three kickoffs for 57 yards to give him a school-record 342 all-purpose yards.
Richard, a senior from Carson, Calif., returned an interception 58 yards for the game-winning touchdown in USC's 41-34 win at Arizona. His winning score came with 1:50 remaining in the game. Richard also had five solo tackles, including one quarterback sack (-10), forced a fumble and had two pass deflections. The USC defense intercepted four Arizona passes, returning two of the for touchdowns, and posted six quarterback sacks (-35).
Anderson, a junior from Boynton Beach, Fla., kicked the game-winning field goal from 30 yards out as time expired in Washington's 33-31 win at Arizona State. For the game, he was a perfect two-for-two on field goals and three-for-three on PATs. It marked the second time this year that Anderson earned special teams player of the week honors and the fourth time this season the award has gone to a Husky.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running backs Kerry Carter of Stanford, Willie Hurst of Washington and Dave Minnich of Washington State, receivers James Newson of Oregon State, Shaun McDonald of Arizona State and Bobby Wade of Arizona and quarterback Carson Palmer of USC. Also nominated on defense were linebackers Wesly Mallard of Oregon, Nick Barnett of Oregon State and Ben Mahdavi of Washington and backs Michael Jolivette of Arizona, Jason Shivers of Arizona State and Lamont Thompson of Washington State. David Davis of USC and Erik Coleman of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
