Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week (10/29/01)
Oct. 29, 2001
WASHINGTON sophomore forward Melissa Bennett has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 23-29.
Bennett, from Seattle, scored in both Washington victories over the weekend, including a 'golden goal' in the sixth minute of overtime that lifted the Huskies to a 2-1 victory over Arizona State. Bennett played a reserve role in both games as UW swept the Arizona schools in Seattle.
Against Arizona Oct. 26, Bennett scored from eight yards out during the 62nd minute of the Huskies' 2-0 shutout victory. Against Arizona State Oct. 28, Bennett received a throw-in, turned and struck a 15-yard shot inside the right post to break a 1-1 tie and end the game.
WASHINGTON (10-3-1, 4-1-0), ranked 16th in last week's national polls, travels to No. 3/No. 4 UCLA and USC this weekend. The Huskies share a three-way tie for second place in the Pac-10 standings with the Bruins and Trojans.
This is Bennett's first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Washington's 10th women's soccer Player of the Week honor all-time. Four of Washington's all-time Player of the Week selections can be attributed to Bennetts, as Melissa's sister, Tami Bennett, graduated from Washington last spring after earning Player of the Week honors three times during her career.
ALSO NOMINATED: Jo Fletcher, Jr. GK, OSU, Shaelyn Fernandes, Sr. GK, USC, Katrina Stroh, Jr. F, WSU.
