UW's Weiss Defeated in Consolation Championship Match at ITA Regionals

SANTA CLARA, Ca. - Washington men's tennis player Nick Weiss was defeated by California's Chase Exon in two sets, 6-0, 6-4 in the consolation championship match of the ITA's Regional Championships. Earlier in the day, Weiss held on to defeat Nick Otte of Pacific in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 in the semifinals. He finishes the tournament with 6-2 record, already bettering his 5-3 overall record from last year.
After starting the tournament with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), win over Axel Elvik of USF, Weiss lost in the second round to Cal's Conor Niland, 6-2, 6-1 to even his record to 1-1. Moving over to the consolation bracket, the Husky got on a roll with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chris Myer of Stanford in the second round. Ivan Anderson of Nevada was the next to fall victim to Weiss, losing 6-1, 6-4. In the round of 16, the sophomore out of Santa Monica, Calif., made things look easy with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Arturo Planell of SMC in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Weiss faced Rick Ruso of SCU and defeated him 6-4, 7-6 (5), to advance to the semifinals.
The ITA National Championships will continue Nov. 8-11 in Dallas, Texas at the Brookhaven Country Club. The Huskies open their regular season with a home match against Portland on Jan. 25, 2002.
