2001-02 Fiesta Bowl Selection Procedures

The 2001-02 Pac-10 Champion goes to the Fiesta Bowl, unless such Champion is ranked number one or two in the nation at the conclusion of the regular season. In that case, it would play in the National Championship Game in the Rose Bowl.

Fiesta Bowl Selection Procedures

If a Conference team is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) ranking system it shall participate in the National Championship Game designated by the BCS. If that is not the case, the following procedures will determine the Pacific-10 Fiesta Bowl Representative. The Pacific-10 Fiesta Bowl representative shall be that member's team with the best record in the loss and tie columns (a tie being counted as one-half loss) in all Conference games. If, however, the lowest loss-tie totals of two or more members are identical, determination of the Fiesta Bowl representative shall be as follows:

a. Two-Team Tie

If the tied teams played one another, the winner of their game shall be the representative. If they tied or did not play one another, then the following formula shall be used:

(1) Count 4 points for a Conference win.
(2) Count 3 points for a non-Conference win.

The team with the highest point total for all games shall be the Fiesta Bowl representative.

If a tie remains, the last team appearing in the Rose Bowl shall be eliminated. (12/ 85)

b. Multiple-Team Ties

When three or more teams are tied in the loss-tie column in Conference play, if one has defeated all others, it shall be the Fiesta Bowl representative. If that is not the case, a team defeated by all other tied teams shall be eliminated. If one team has not defeated the others, the point formula shall be computed. Only the top two teams on the point system shall thereafter be considered. If a tie for the second position occurs upon application of the point formula, the second team shall be the winner of the game between the tied teams, or, if the teams did notplay each other or played a tie game, the team which has not played in the Rose Bowl for the longest period of time shall be the second team. If more than two teams remain tied after computing the point formula, the team most recently appearing in the Rose Bowl shall be eliminated and the appropriate two-team or multiple tie-breaking procedures are then applied to the remaining teams.

If the remaining two teams played one another, the winner shall be the representative. If they tied or did not play one another, the team with the highest point total for all games shall be the Rose Bowl representative as in Pac-10 AR 5-2-a. If a tie remains, the team most recently appearing in the Rose Bowl shall be eliminated.
