Beavers To Mix It Up With San Jose State
Oct. 30, 2001
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3
San Jose State at Oregon State, 2 p.m.
Oregon State (1-2 overall duals, 0-1 Pacific-10 duals) will be trying to keep its focus on racing hard when the Beavers play host to San Jose State (0-1, 0-0 Western Athletic) in a non-league dual meet Saturday afternoon at Stevens Natatorium.
After beating Utah last weekend, the Beavers will change things up a bit on Saturday, putting some swimmers in events that aren't their specialties. The moves will free OSU's swimmers from worrying about how their times compare to their previous efforts in those events.
'It lets them relax a bit - the comparison pressure is off,' OSU head coach Marisuz Podkoscielny said. 'There won't be any expectations as far as their times are concerned, the expectations will be as far as racing, finishing as high as possible and scoring points.'
It will also allow for a bit of a change of pace for the Beavers.
'They like it, because we usually expect certain things and it doesn't vary much,' Podkoscielny said. 'This time, they'll be able to get in the blocks and it will add some spice for them.'
The different look will also give OSU's coaching staff more insight as to how the Beavers can perform in other events, perhaps leading to added lineup options for future meets.
OSU junior Naya Higashijima will try to extend her perfect record this season. Higashijima has won all three of her events in each of the Beavers' first three dual meets to give her a team-high nine victories this season. Last week, Higashijima shattered her own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle by almost five seconds.
San Jose State did not compete last weekend. The Spartans opened their dual meet season Oct. 19, losing to Washington State 119-96 in San Jose. SJSU picked up victories from Brooke Wells in the 500 freestyle (5:09.00) and Emily Hutson in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.80), plus its 400 freestyle relay team (3:45.94).
The Spartans are in their first year under new head coach Victor Wales.
'They went through a coaching change and they're in a rebuilding process right now,' Podkoscielny said of the Spartans. 'They brought Victor in from Arizona State and he'll do an awesome job.'
ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time dual meet record of 10-1 against San Jose State in a series dating back to 1993. The Beavers are on a 4-meet winning streak against the Spartans after winning 178-116 in San Jose last season. The last meeting in Corvallis was OSU's 138-115 victory to open the 1999-2000 season, that was the Beavers' first-ever meet at Stevens Natatorium. San Jose State's lone victory in the series came during the 1997 season in San Jose by a score of 143-133.
LAST WEEK: Naya Higashijima shattered her own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle as Oregon State beat Utah 116-89 in non-league women's swimming Oct. 16 at Stevens Natatorium. Higashajima won 3 events for the Beavers, who won 8 of the 11 events against the Utes (0-1, 0-0 Mountain West).
'Our theme for this week was racing,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'Not winning or times, but racing hard. The winning and the times are a byproduct of racing hard, and we had to focus on how to get there.'
Higashijima's time of 10 minutes, 9.39 seconds in the 1,000 freestyle against Utah was almost five seconds better than the mark of 10:14.32, which she set at the 2001 Pacific-10 Championships. Higashijima also won the 200 butterfly in 2:04.68 and the 500 freestyle in 4:59.47.
'She's in the best shape of her life,' Podkoscielny said of Higashijima, who has won all 9 of her dual meet events this season. 'This is Naya's year.'
OSU also got victories from Birte Steven in the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.08, Paula Finlay in the 400 individual medley in 4:32.28, Kristin Huston in the 50 freestyle in 24.36 seconds, its 400 medley relay team of Bonnie Renwick, Steven, Suzanne Starkey and Verena Haas in 3:54.74, and its 400 freestyle relay team of Huston, Renwick, Starkey and Finlay in 3:33.91.
Along with Higashijima's school record, the Beavers made several other jumps on the school's list of all-time leaders in each event. Freshman Grace Peterson climbed from eighth place to a tie for fourth in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:38.50, freshman Mari Embertson moved onto the 400 IM list in seventh place at 4:35.07 and the 200 breaststroke list in ninth place at 2:25.53, and Steven entered the 200 freestyle list in eighth place at 1:55.03.
HEAD COACH MARIUSZ PODKOSCIELNY: Mariusz Podkoscielny is in his sixth season as head coach at Oregon State. Since taking over the Beaver program at the start of the 1996-97 season, Podkoscielny's teams have a dual meet record of 22-32 overall and 2-15 in the Pacific-10.
Podkoscielny, 33, is a nine-time All-American and 2-time Olympian. Prior to coming to OSU in the fall of 1996, Podkoscielny had been an assistant men's and women's coach at Arizona since 1993.
A native of Gdansk, Poland, Podkoscielny was a member of the Arizona swim team from 1988-92 and was one of the fastest distance swimmers in UA history. He was also on the Polish National Team from 1980-92 and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics.
STEVENS NATATORIUM: Oregon State swims its home meets at Stevens Natatorium on the OSU campus. The Beavers are 1-0 at home in dual meets this season and have an all-time record of 6-3 in the pool.
Stevens Natatorium is adjacent to Dixon Recreation Center, near Gill Coliseum. The pool opened in 1994 but was not outfitted for competition until prior to the 1999-2000 season.
OSU had scheduled its home meets at Corvallis' Osborn Aquatic Center since the community pool opened for the 1979-80 season. A few meets were still held on campus at Langton Pool.
