Oct. 31, 2001
OAHU, Haw. - -
Laura Skinner played the first two rounds of the Rainbow Wahine Golf Classic in 10-over par 154 to pace the Oregon State women's golf team and help the Beavers to a tie for 10th place after two rounds on Tuesday at the par-72 Kapolei Golf Course.
OSU's top four players combined for a total of 626 over Tuesday's two rounds, opening with a 314 and firing a 312 in the second round.
Out of the 19-team, 95-player field, no individual was able to break par over two rounds on what is traditionally a windy, difficult 5,900-yard course.
Skinner, who has bettered her career-best finish in each of her last two outings, is in a tie for 23rd after shooting 78-76 in Tuesday's two rounds. The sophomore from Boise, Idaho, has finished her last two tournaments among the top 30, and carries a 76.6 stroke average.
'Laura played very well today,' OSU assistant coach Angie Cates said. 'I think she'll play well Wednesday, and hopefully she'll get another top-25 finish. This should give her a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.'
Skinner is within three shots of cracking the top-10.
Stacie Ferguson, a junior, joined Skinner in the top 30 with her total of 155, which included a second-round 77. Ferguson is tied for 30th.
Three shots back of Ferguson is Ashlei Pendleton, who went out in 77 and finished her second round with an 81. The junior is tied for 41st at 158.
Freshmen Alex Lucio and Kelly Kervliet shot 159 and 168, respectively. Lucio forged a tie for 47th by finishing strong with a second-round 78, and Kerkvliet is knotted at 84th.
New Mexico built an eight-shot lead over Arizona as the Lobos fired a 596, good for 20-over par.
Individually, Claudia Ferrini of New Mexico owns a three-stroke lead at one-over-par 145.
The teams play 18 holes Wednesday to wrap up the tournament, which will be the last of the fall season for the Beavers.
