Women's Golf 11th In Hawaii
Oct. 31, 2001
OAHU, Haw. - -
The Oregon State women's golf team battled wind and rain for the second day in a row at the par-72, 5,900-yard Kapolei Golf Course, finishing with a 314 on Wednesday for a total of 940 and an 11th-place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Golf Classic.
Laura Skinner led the Beavers in their final tournament of the fall season, shooting a 79 Wednesday and finishing tied for 32nd at 233. For the third tournament in a row, the sophomore topped last season's best finish of 33rd, and has been a major factor in the Beavers' improved play this year.
Also making an impact this year has been the junior tandem of Ashlei Pendleton and Stacie Ferguson. Pendleton signed for a 77 on Wednesday, giving her a total of 235 and a tie for 40th, and Ferguson finished at 238, which included a round of 77 on Tuesday, and tied for 56th.
Joining Ferguson in 56th was freshman Alex Lucio, who has been steady while playing in every tournament so far. Lucio fired a final-round 79 on Wednesday, giving her 238 for the three rounds.
Corvallis native Kelly Kerkvliet, a freshman, turned in a 79 to finish tied for 82nd.
OSU's scores to date have been an improvement over the same span last season, which eventually saw the Beavers tie for 10th at the NCAA West Regional, but assistant coach Angie Cates believes there is potential for greater things.
'They're doing better, but I think that every time they tee it up they should be shooting in the low 70s,' Cates said. 'They just need to build their confidence and trust their golf swing.'
The Beavers did get important wins over regional competitors Long Beach State, UNLV, Oregon, and Hawaii at the Rainbow Classic.
Individually, Arizona's Lorena Ochoa tamed the elements to post a final-round 69 and claim the individual title with a 4-over-par 220.
New Mexico took home the team title, winning by 21 strokes over Arizona. The Lobos, who had three individuals among the top-10, shot 884.
OSU won't play again until February 25, when they tee it up at the Arizona Invitational.
