*Meet to be held at the Avery Aquatic Center
STANFORD MEN'S AND WOMEN'S DIVING ESSENTIAL QUICK NOTES
The Stanford men's diving team will make its 2001-02 debut at the Stanford Invite on Friday-Saturday, November 2-3 ... The Cardinal women's diving team will be competing for the third time after helping the Stanford women's swimming and diving team to victories over Georgia and Texas last week ... The Stanford women's team could be among the strongest in the nation with a total of eight divers, including a pair of returning All-Americans in junior McKenze Murphy and senior Kim Powers, who missed last season due to a shoulder injury ... The women's team has a strong freshmen class of five divers, led by six-time Senior National champion Erica Sorgi, already considered one of the finest divers in United States history ... The men's diving team is a bit more inexperienced with two sophomores and two freshmen making up its four-man roster.
UP NEXT FOR THE CARDINAL
Following this week's Stanford Invite, the men's and women's diving teams will next travel to the Trojan Invite (November 8-10) hosted by USC.
MEN'S DIVING PREVIEW
The Cardinal will be young but talented in 2001-02. Sophomores Brian Ferris and Jesse Fonner are the two returnees and will be joined by freshmen Jeff Durbin and Adam Peterson. Ferris posted his best dual score in the one-meter (274.275) and three-meter (297.075) events against California (2/17/01) last year while Fonner is looking to build upon his ninth place showing in the prelims of both the three-meter and platform events at the 2001 Pac-10 Championships.
WOMEN'S DIVING PREVIEW
Stanford is both extremely talented and deep this season. The Cardinal should be one of the NCAA's best in diving and may be one of the best women's diving teams ever at Stanford. Junior McKenze Murphy returns after earning a pair of All-American honors in the one-meter (5th, 299.25) and platform (7th, 403.00) events last year. Five-time All-American senior Kim Powers comes back from a shoulder injury that kept her out of action last year and senior Alexis Sowa also returns after showing excellent improvement last season. A large freshman class of five divers is led by six-time Senior National champion Erica Sorgi, one of the finest young divers ever in the United States. Other incoming freshmen include Katie Berglund, Lauren Donovan, Erin Lashnits and Ashlee Rosenthal.
WOMEN'S DIVERS HELP CARDINAL IN WINS OVER GEORGIA AND TEXAS
The women's diving outfit played a key role in a pair of victories over perennial national powers for the Stanford women's swimming and diving team last week. Erica Sorgi (one-meter) and Ashlee Rosenthal (three-meter) won individual diving events and the Cardinal finished one-two-three in the three-meter in a victory over defending NCAA champion Georgia (158.5-141.5). In the win over Texas (168-132), Kim Powers won the three-meter and the Cardinal finished two-three-four in the one-meter.
