No. 4 Stanford Defeats Oregon Volleyball, 3-1
Nov. 2, 2001
With a record crowd of 1,863 fans at McArthur Court Friday evening, the University of Oregon volleyball team battled the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal, eventually falling 30-25, 29-31, 30-13, 30-18. Oregon's record fell to 8-16 overall, 0-13 Pac-10 and the league-leading Cardinal improved to 19-2, 11-1.
It was one of the Ducks' top performances of the season, with senior Monique Tobbagi leading the Ducks with 18 kills, six digs and one block in her final match against Stanford. Tobbagi consistently kept the Ducks in games one and two with Oregon eventually tying the match at one game apiece on a service ace by sophomore Lindsay Murphy.
'This was Monique's last match against Stanford and we really wanted to go out there and give it our all,' said junior Lindsay Closs, who finished with 10 kills, six digs and five blocks.
Tobbagi followed up a 20-kill performance last night against California to finish the weekend with 38 kills, bringing her career total to 1,095.
Prior to last season, when Oregon took the Cardinal to five games at home, the Ducks had won just one game off of Stanford dating back to 1993. According to Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira, Friday's effort is proof that the Ducks are improving.
'It says a lot about our character,' Ferreira said. 'Nobody is giving up and the players are learning on a match by match basis. Playing at a high level is something we're looking to attain and when our upper division players are performing, it's like a magnet.'
