Nov. 2, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Freshman Megan Kakadelas' goal at 8:44 proved to be the game-winner Friday as the No. 23 USC Trojans defeated the Washington State Cougars, 1-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at McAlister Field. It was the third straight win for USC by a 1-0 score. The Women of Troy (10-4-1, 5-1 Pac-10) are now 9-1-1 in their last 11 games and have recorded four shutouts in their last five games.
The goal came on the Trojans' first shot of the game. Junior Stephanie Scholl fed a pass to Kakadelas, who fired a low shot at the top of the penalty box past Washington State goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen. USC controlled the first 20 minutes of the half before Washington State (7-7-0, 2-4) put some pressure in the latter portion of the half.
Senior Shaelyn Fernandes (San Jose/Presentation HS) tied a school record with her sixth shutout of the season, tying the mark held by Laura Badagliacco (1994) and Karin Puccinelli (1998). She also set a school record with her third consecutive shutout.
'I thought we played well in the first 20 minutes of the first half and played a complete second half,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'Everyone is contributing and this sets us up for a battle against Washington on Sunday. We just have to remain focused and play one game at a time.'
USC outshot Washington State, 14-10, and had an 8-3 edge in the second half. The Trojans had three point-blank opportunties in the second half, but could not convert.
The Trojans will host No. 15 Washington on Sunday (Nov. 4) at 1 p.m. at McAlister Field. It will be Senior Day as the Trojans play their final home match of the regular season.
