Nov. 3, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - U.S. Olympian Logan Tom hit .432 with match-highs of 23 kills and 18 digs as No. 3 Stanford knocked off the Oregon State volleyball team in three games Saturday night. Game scores were 30-23, 30-22, and 35-33.
Gina Schmidt led the Beavers (15-7, 8-5 Pacific-10) with 12 kills, while three other players chipped in nine kills apiece.
'I thought this was one of the best matches we've played all year. We did so many things well, and we did it against one of the best teams in the country,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'I feel good about tonight. This is where we need to be playing right now.'
After dropping the first two games, the Beavers hung with the Cardinal (21-2, 12-1) in game three and nearly held on to win. With the game tied at 19-19, the Beavers scored three of the next four points to take a 23-20 lead, but the Cardinal crept back in the game and eventually tied it up at 27-27. Neither team could manage to score two consecutive points for quite some time, with 13 lead changes or ties for the duration of the game. Stanford eventually broke away from a 33-33 tie to score back-to-back points on a Beaver hitting error and a kill from Tom to end the match.
Megan McMillan, who hit .467 for the match, led the way for OSU during the late portions of game three, picking up three of her nine kills near the end of the match. The first of her three kills tied the game at 31, the next tied things up at 32, and her third kill made it 33-33 before the Cardinal closed out the match.
OSU outdug Stanford, 51-50, led by Nikki Neuburger's 11 digs, but the top-ranked blocking team in the Pac-10 outblocked the Beavers, 10-4. Stanford hit .324 as a team and outkilled the Beavers, 63-50. OSU posted a .223 hitting percentage for the match.
