Husky Women Win Exhibition Opener, 81-57
Nov. 4, 2001
SEATTLE, Wash. - Playing in its first game since the 2001 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in March, Washington's women's basketball team today defeated an all-star team from the National Women's Basketball League, 81-57, in an exhibition contest at the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Juniors Emily Autrey and Loree Payne led Washington in scoring with 12 points, while sophomore Giuliana Mendiola and freshman Kayla Burt each reached double-digits with 11 points. Sophomore center Andrea Lalum pulled down 13 of the Huskies' 43 rebounds, and helped hold NWBL Elite to just 32 rebounds and 33 percent shooting.
Tamicha Jackson scored 26 points for NWBL Elite to lead all scorers.
The Huskies, who set a Pac-10 record for three-pointers in a season in 2001, opened the game with a three from junior Loree Payne, one of eight three-pointers made by Washington. The team was also on target from the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-21 shots (.619).
'We had a good balance with our perimeter and post games' says head coach June Daugherty. 'Our post players can step out and hit the three, and our guards can post up and hit the two. We're definitely way ahead of where we were at this same point last season.'
Washington lost six seniors from the 2000-2001 squad that capped a 22-10 season with a Pac-10 championship and a trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, where Jackie Stiles and Southwest Missouri State ended Washington's postseason run just one game short of the Final Four.
The Huskies conclude the exhibition season Mon., Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. against P&P Lady Express, at the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, before opening the regular season at Montana State on Nov. 16.
