Men's Soccer Downs Cal In Overtime, 1-0
Nov. 4, 2001
Berkeley, Calif. - Junior midfielder and co-captain Ryan Futagaki scored on a penalty kick nine minutes into overtime to give the UCLA men's soccer team a 1-0 road victory over California.
At the 98:47 mark, Futagaki was taken down by a Cal defender in the penalty area on a scoring opportunity and was awarded a penalty kick. Futagaki took the penalty kick himself and scored the golden goal for his second score of the season.
The Bruin defense had another strong outing, earning UCLA's third consecutive shutout and allowing only eight shots. Goalkeeper Zach Wells made four saves in the contest and lowered his goals against average to 0.827.
'I can't say enough about our defense,' said UCLA head coach Todd Saldana. 'They held up under so much pressure Friday (against Stanford) and were able to come back with another shutout today.'
The Bruins improve their record to 8-6-4, 3-2-1 in the Pac-10. Cal drops to 9-6-1, 2-3-0. The victory moves UCLA into a tie with Stanford for first place in the conference.
'This was a successful weekend for us,' said Saldana. 'We are still in position to win the league.'
