Notes on ASU Volleyball:
The Devils travel to the Washington schools trying to end a recent skid that has seen the team drop 10 of their last 11 Pac-10 matches... ASU stands at 7-13 overall and 2-10 in Pac-10 play... ASU has six matches remaining in 2001, including two matches each vs. California and Stanford (make-ups due to Sept. 11)... ASU has had recent success in the Pacific Northwest, sweeping the Huskies and Cougars on the road last year and carries a three-match road win streak into Saturday's match with the Huskies... despite falling 3-1 to fourth-ranked Arizona, the Devils played one of their toughest matches of the year... senior Jami Coughlin (Glendale, Ariz.) tied her career high with 26 digs and sophomore Courtney Blocher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) set her career high, also with 26... ASU recorded a season-high 101 digs in the four-game match... ASU has now lost nine of the last 10 matches to its in-state rival... Coughlin continues to have a banner senior season on the court, averaging 3.75 kpg and leads the Pac-10 with 3.80 dpg... she is averaging a team and Pac-10 best 4.29 dpg in Pac-10 only matches... with 12 kills vs. Arizona, she moved into a tie for sixth place in the ASU record books with 1,296 career kills... her 1,427 career digs is already second most in ASU history and recently has moved into eighth place in Pac-10 career history... she is the Pac-10 active career leader in digs... with her 12-kill, 26-dig effort vs. the Wildcats, Coughlin now has 14 double-doubles on the year and 56 in her career... sophomore outside hitter Kim Mehlhorn (Tempe, Ariz.) tied a career-high with 19 kills against Arizona and has strung together nine consecutive matches with 10 or more kills... over that string of matches is averaging 3.91 kills per game... for the season Mehlhorn is second on the team with 3.25 kpg and third with 2.81 dpg... she leads all Sun Devils with a 3.74 kpg average in Pac-10 only matches... Blocher is averaging 3.13 dpg overall in 2001 and has a 3.43 dpg average in ASU's 12 Pac-10 matches... Blocher has recorded 11 matches with 10 or more digs this year, including four matches with 20+... freshman Alicia Akporiaye (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded two big matches against Arizona this year, tallying 6.0 and 5.0 total blocks respectively... for the year, Akporiaye is averaging 1.65 kpg, 2.02 dpg and 0.62 blocks per game... sophomore middle blocker Jodi Smith (St. Johns, Ariz.) leads the team with 0.91 blocks per game and is ranked in the top 10 in the Pac-10 with 1.05 bpg in conference matches... junior Julia Leddy (Mesa, Ariz.) leads ASU with a .346 hitting percentage and is third on the team with 2.79 kpg... Blocher, Coughlin, sophomore setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and junior defensive specialist Brittany Arnett (Mesa, Ariz.) are the only Sun Devils' who have played in all 76 of ASU's games this year... Anglin recently moved into sixth place in the ASU career record books with 2,296 career assists... sophomore outside hitter Natalie Harris (Tempe, Ariz.) had surgery on her right shoulder and will apply for a medical redshirt... Harris played in only 11 games, averaging 1.18 kpg and 1.27 dpg... 13-year head coach Patti Snyder-Park is two wins shy of 200 for her career... Anglin, Mehlhorn, Leddy and Coughlin have all been nominated for the Pac-10 and Verizon District VIII All-Academic teams.
Pac-10 Player of the Week Nomination:
Kim Mehlhorn (OH, So., Tempe, Ariz.): In ASU's only match of the week, sophomore outside hitter Kim Mehlhorn tied her career high in kills with 19 against fourth-ranked Arizona... Mehlhorn hit .278 (19-4-54), added 16 digs and contributed 20.0 total points... the 19 kills not only tied her career high set earlier in 2001 vs. Washington State (10/13), but it continues a trend that has seen her better her previous career high of 11 kills from 2000 nine times this year... Mehlhorn has strung together nine consecutive matches with 10 or more kills (3.91 kpg average over those matches) and is second on the team with a 3.25 kpg average.
