The Facts
The Pac-10 conference championship is at stake this week as the No. 5 USC women's volleyball team (17-2, 11-1 Pac-10) travels to Cal (8-13, 3-10 Pac-10) on Friday, Nov. 9, and to No. 3 Stanford (21-2, 12-1 Pac-10) on Saturday, Nov. 10. With one loss apiece in the Pac-10, the Cardinal and Women of Troy will play for sole possession of first place on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. and the USC-Stanford match can be heard live via the internet at www.gostanford.com. The Women of Troy are coming off a 3-0 (30-27, 30-19, 30-19) victory over Washington on Friday (Nov. 2) and 3-1 win over Washington State (30-23, 30-19, 27-30, 30-24) on Saturday (Nov. 3).

The Rankings
USC maintained position in the polls with two wins last week. The Women of Troy are No. 5 in this week's USA Today/AVCA Coaches poll and the Volleyball magazine poll. Long Beach State and Nebraska, both of whom USC will not face in the regular season, hold onto the No. 1 and 2 spots on the charts, while Stanford and Arizona remain at No. 3 and 4, respectively.

Recent Matches
vs. Washington
-- With 12 kills and 15 digs by April Ross, USC swept the Washington Huskies 30-27, 30-19, 30-19 in front on 693 on Friday (Nov. 2) at the Lyon Center. The victory marked the Trojans' 12th sweep of the season and 26th straight win at home. USC finished on top in each category with 55 kills (.269), 58 digs and 10.0 blocks. Washington was held to a .079 attack percentage with 35 kills, 49 digs and 8.5 blocks. Ross' performance was backed by an 11-kill (.308), 10-dig effort from hitter Keao Burdine. Captain Lauren Killian led the team in hitting efficiency by scoring on seven kills off of nine attacks (.667) and adding three blocks.

vs. Washington State -- With another explosive effort from April Ross, the Women of Troy defeated Washington State 3-1 (30-23, 30-19, 27-30, 30-24) on Saturday, Nov. 3, in front of 732 at the Lyon Center. With a season-best 23 kills and .442 attack percentage in addition to 13 digs, Ross was one of five Trojans to finish with double digit kills and one of six to finish with double-digit digs. Katie Olsovsky led USC at the net with five blocks and setter Toni Anderson recorded a career-high three aces. USC dominated defensively, out-digging the Cougars 86 to 64 and out-blocking 12.0 to 7.0. The Women of Troy hit .341 with 78 kills off of 170 attacks, while Washington State hit .200 with 66 kills off of 190 attempts.

Trojans Invade The Bay
The volleyball team will be accompanied by three other USC teams this week when it travels to the Bay Area. Football, women's soccer and men's water polo all have scheduled games against the Bay Area schools. The women's soccer team will begin by facing Stanford on Friday at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, men's water polo plays at Cal at 10:30 a.m. and football kicks off against the Golden Bears at 12:30 p.m. Women's soccer will play at Cal on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Haley En Route To 800 Career Victories
With 790 collegiate career wins to date, head coach Mick Haley is just 10 wins shy of reaching the 800 mark. These career victories include the 251-51 record he garnered while at Kellogg Community College. His overall Division I record is 539-139-1.

Ross Dominates Against Washington Schools
Against Washington and Washington State, April Ross averaged a team-leading .359 attack percentage, 5.0 kills, 4.0 digs and 0.7 blocks per game - by far, her best weekend of the season. She led USC with a season-high 23 kills (two shy of tying her career high), a .442 attack percentage, 13 digs and three blocks against the Cougars and led USC with 12 kills (.257), 15 digs (ties a season-high) and two blocks against the Huskies.

USC Extends Home Match Win Streak
With its home victory over UCLA on Sept. 21, USC set a new record for consecutive home wins (20)... and it is still growing. To date, the Trojans have won 27 consecutive matches at home, starting with a 3-0 win over Rhode Island on Sept. 6, 2000. USC's previous record was 19 straight home victories set between Sept. 25, 1976, and Oct. 19, 1978.

Davis Works Her Way Into Starting Lineup
Defensive specialist Nicole Davis has played in every game this season as a rotating substitute for middle blocker Jennifer Pahl in the backrow. With her much-improved defense, Davis has found her way into the starting lineup in the last three matches. With a strong emphasis on serve-receive, head coach Mick Haley has moved Davis into the starting rotation. Davis starts each match in the back row and Pahl rotates in, in the front row. Davis leads the team in service aces (0.30 sapg) and averages 2.33 digs per game.

News-N-Notes
USC has lost only 12 games this season and has won 51 *** The Trojans have been swept only once (at Arizona, Oct. 25) and lost only two matches *** USC has had three 1,000+ crowds (vs. UCLA 9/21, vs. Arizona 9/29, vs. Stanford 10/12) *** April Ross has contributed double digit kills in 16 of 19 matches *** Freshman Keao Burdine has posted double digit kills in 15 of 19 matches.

Bay Area Connections
Assistant coach Paula Weishoff and Stanford assistant coach Kim Oden were U.S.A. teammates. The two helped lead the United States to a bronze medal finish at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain *** Cal head coach Rich Feller was an assistant coach to USC head coach Mick Haley with the U.S.A. women's national team in 1997-98 *** Haley coached Stanford outside hitter Logan Tom while on the U.S. National Team *** Cal OH/DS Ashleigh Turner and USC DS Kristen Anderson were prep teammates at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

USC Third In NCAA In Assists Thanks To Setting Duo
As of Oct. 28, the Trojans are third in the nation in team assists with a 16.07 assist per game average. Ironically, the Women of Troy don't have a setter ranked in the Top 25 nationally or even among the Top 5 in the Pac-10. This is because USC uses two setters. Running a 6-2 offense, the Trojans boast the talent of both Toni Anderson and Tracy Lindquist. The two see equal time on the court and, while they sacrifice individual accolades, together they lead the nation's No. 5 team. Anderson and Lindquist average 8.69 and 5.88 assists per game, respectively.

USC Still Dominating At The Net
USC has held opponents this season to a .167 average attack percentage. Arizona and Stanford are the only opponents this season to hit above .200 when the Wildcats managed to hit .305 on Sept. 29 and .395 on Oct. 25, while the Cardinal hit .278 on Oct. 12. The Trojans dominate at the net overall by out-hitting opponents .308 to .167 (17.77 to 14.09 kills per game), out-blocking opponents by a 1.18 margin and forcing 7.2 opponent attack errors per game. USC leads the Pac-10 in attack percentage and ranks second in opponent attack percentage.

**The Trojans also lead the Pac-10 in assists (16.22 apg) and kills (17.77 kpg).**

More News-N-Notes
Toni Anderson set two career marks against Washington State (Nov. 3) with three aces and three kills *** Katie Olsovsky tied a career-high with 11 digs against the Cougars (Nov. 3) *** Against WSU (Nov. 3), Nicole Davis set a new career mark with 13 digs *** USC recorded its lowest point total in a single game against Arizona on Oct. 25 in a 30-15 game two loss *** The Trojans defeated the Bruins twice this season for the first time since 1998 *** At UCLA (Oct. 19), Nicole Davis tied her career best with 11 digs *** Toni Anderson set a new career high with 54 assists against the Bruins (Oct. 19) *** Katie Olsovsky tied career highs with nine blocks against UCLA (Oct. 19) and 11 digs against Pepperdine (Oct. 16) *** Katie Olsovsky added another performance to the record books with a career-best .733 (11-0-15) attack effort against Cal (Oct. 13) - that ranks fifth among USC records *** Nicole Davis had a career-high seven service aces vs. Stanford (Oct. 12) - the mark ranks fifth among USC records (one ace shy of the mark) *** Kelli Lantz had a career-high six blocks against Washington (Oct. 5) *** The Trojans won 27 consecutive games this season (9/6-10/5) *** Against No. 3 Arizona, five players hit above .400 and the Women of Troy hit .450 as a team *** Alicia Robinson's hitting performance (14-0-20, .700) against the Bruins (Sept. 21) ranks 10th all-time among USC individual match leaders *** Katie Olsovsky collected a career-high nine blocks against UCSB (Sept. 18) and then surpassed a career high with 11 digs against UCLA (Sept. 21).

Haley In First Season
Mick Haley is in his first official season as head coach of the Women of Troy. Though hired in 1999 to replace former head coach Lisa Love, Haley completed his term as head coach of the U.S.A. Women's National Team before joining the Trojans. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he led the United States to an unexpected fourth-place finish. Haley coached Texas for 17 seasons (1980-1996) and led the Longhorns to two national championships. He owns a 539-139-1 (.795) Division I career record and a 790-190-1 (.806) overall mark.

Opponent Notes

Cal (8-13, 3-10 Pac-10) -- Cal is coming off a 3-1 win at Oregon on Nov. 1 and a 3-0 loss at Oregon State on Nov. 2. The Bears have won only three matches in conference play - two against Oregon and one against Washington. Despite its struggles, Cal managed to upset then-ranked No. 19 Santa Clara in a 3-2 road victory on Oct. 26. The Bears are led by mid-season addition Mia Jerkov, who is averaging 3.36 kills, 0.42 service aces and 2.67 digs per game. Middle blocker Camille Leffall averages a team-high 0.99 blocks per game. Cal ranks fourth in the Pac-10 in aces (1.69), sixth in digs (14.93), ninth in kills (13.90) and assists (12.43) and 10th in hitting percentage (.188), opponent hitting percentage (.241) and blocks (1.94).

In the last meeting... USC notched its 11th consecutive victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Cal on Oct. 13 in front of 638 at the Lyon Center. Katie Olsovsky led the Trojans with a career-high .733 (11-0-15) attack effort - a mark that ranks fifth among USC individual match records. Four Trojans finished with double digits in kills, including April Ross who added 13. Keao Burdine tallied 12 digs while Nicole Davis tied a career-best with 11 digs of her own. As a team, USC hit at a .319 (65-22-135) clip and held the Bears to .168 (37-17-119). While out-digging Cal 57 to 38, the Women of Troy were nearly matched at the net as Cal posted 3.0 blocks to the Trojans' 4.0.

USC-Cal Series Record -- The Trojans own a 31-6 (.838) all-time record against Cal. USC has recorded 18 consecutive victories over the Golden Bears after sweeping in October and posting two 3-0 wins last season.

No. 3 Stanford (21-2, 12-1 Pac-10) -- Stanford is riding a seven-match win streak into this week's matches. Its last loss was against the Women of Troy on Oct. 12 in Los Angeles. Last week, the Cardinal defeated Oregon (3-1) and Oregon State (3-0) on the road. The team is led by hitter Logan Tom, who is averaging 4.78 kills (.325), 0.54 aces and 3.41 digs per game. Tom was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for her performances against the Ducks and Beavers. Sara McGee leads the team at the net with an average of 1.56 blocks per game. The Cardinal leads the conference in blocks (3.65) and opponent hitting percentage (.158), ranks third in hitting percentage (.303), fourth in assists (15.05) and kills (16.44), fifth in aces (1.68) and ninth in digs (14.18). McGee tops the Pac-10 in blocks, while Tom leads in kill, aces and points (5.82 ppg).

In the last meeting... In a battle of the Pac-10 undefeated, USC came back after dropping the first game to beat fourth-ranked Stanford 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-26) in front of a sellout crowd of 1205 at the Lyon Center on Oct. 12. With the victory, the Women of Troy took sole possession of first place in the conference race. It was a match decided in the back row as the Cardinal won the hitting (.278 to .274) and blocking (12.0 to 8.0) battle, but succumbed to a Women of Troy defense which collected 61 digs compared to Stanford's 42. The Trojans also tallied nine points off of service aces thanks to the efforts of Nicole Davis, who contributed a career-high seven, just one shy of the USC record. The Women of Troy finished with four players in double figure kills and four in double figure digs, including double-double performances from April Ross (20 kills, 13 digs), Keao Burdine (20 kills, 11 digs) and Katie Olsovsky (10 kills, 10 digs). Olsovsky and Lauren Killian each added five blocks.

USC-Stanford Series Record -- The Women of Troy have won the last three meetings against the Cardinal, but of the 100+ opponents USC has faced in program history, only seven own a winning record against the Trojans and Stanford is one of them. USC improved to 13-41-1 (.241) against the Cardinal after a win at home in October and two wins last season. It was the first time USC beat Stanford twice in one season. The Sept. 22, 2000, win at Stanford was the first time the Women of Troy defeated the Cardinal at Maples Pavilion since 1977.
