OSU Takes Win Streak To Nevada
Nov. 6, 2001
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10
Oregon State at Nevada, 11 a.m.
After two weekends - and two wins - at home, Oregon State (2-2 overall duals, 0-1 Pacific-10 duals) starts a two-month stretch of women's swimming meets on the road when it travels to Nevada (1-0 overall, 0-0 Western Athletic) on Saturday for an 11 a.m. non-conference dual meet.
The Beavers altered their lineup in a 99-87 victory over San Jose State last Saturday at Stevens Natatorium. This week, OSU will return its swimmers to their accustomed events as they go against a Nevada program that fields consistently fast teams.
'We are going with our strongest lineup, we are looking for hard racing from every single swimmer, and we want to stay focused on individual races,' OSU coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'We beat them here last year, but there will be new factors this year. They have new swimmers and with the altitude (in Reno), we are going to have to respond in their pool.'
Oregon State junior Naya Higashijima will try to continue her unbeaten streak. Higashijima has won all 11 of her races so far, including one as an exhibition competitor against San Jose State. She won three races in each of OSU's first three duals against California-Santa Barbara, UCLA and Utah.
OSU's Annie Zucker (knee) and Grace Peterson (shoulder) are battling injuries but are listed as probable for Saturday's meet.
Following the meet against Nevada, the Beavers will have 18 days of much-needed time to prepare for the Speedo Cup to be held in Long Beach, Calif., from Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
'We have two big meets, and the Speedo Cup is one of them,' Podkoscielny said. 'We need the 18 days to take care of academics, and to rest so we're refreshed for that meet.'
Nevada's only dual meet this season was a 122-78 win over California-Davis on Oct. 18. The Wolfpack placed second in the four-team Pacific (Calif.) Invitational on Oct. 19-20, and Nevada will swim against No. 7 California on Friday before meeting the Beavers.
ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time dual meet record of 2-9 versus Nevada, and OSU is on a one-meet win streak in the series. The two teams met last season in Corvallis with the Beavers coming out on top 156-106. OSU is looking for its first ever win at Nevada, the last meeting in Reno was a 111-27 Wolfpack win in 1999.
LAST WEEK: Naya Higashijima set an Oregon State school record for the second time in just over a week and OSU evened its dual meet record at 2-2 with a 99-87 victory over San Jose State on Nov. 3, at Stevens Natatorium.
Higashijima finished the 400-yard individual medley in 4 minutes, 26.56 seconds, eclipsing Birte Steven's mark of 4:27.99 set last season. The junior's time also broke the Stevens Natatorium record time of 4:28.50, set by Washington State's Andree-Anne LeRoy in 2001.
Higashijima had bettered her own shool record in the 1,000 freestyle in a dual meet victory over Utah on Oct. 26.
'This is definitely going to be Naya's year,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'She has been slowly getting better each year and working hard during the summer. She prepares herself and stays focused and gets ready. Come September, she is ready to go. This year is the year I think Naya's goals for getting to and scoring at the NCAAs is in her reach. It is hers for the taking.'
The Beavers jumped out to an early lead over the Spartans with first-place finishes in the meet's first four events. Suzanne Starkey, Birte Steven, Bonnie Renwick and Kristin Huston teamed to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.63. Verena Haas took first in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:28.99, Huston won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.11 and Starkey claimed victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.20.
Jessie Hong finished first in the 200 backstroke and Steven was the top finisher in the 200 breaststroke for the Beavers, who altered their lineup and had several members competing as exhibition racers in events during the meet.
'It allows coaches to see a different side of what the swimmers are capable of,' Podkoscielny said of juggling the lineup. 'We usually stick to events we believe our swimmers are going to be best at. Because of the dual meet and how competitive it gets, we don't get the chance to put them in events where they don't normally compete, so we don't see what they are capable of doing in other events.
'This gives us more options when we go to the next meet because we know what they are capable of doing. It makes it a little more relaxed for them and helps them refocus for the next meet.'
HEAD COACH MARIUSZ PODKOSCIELNY: Mariusz Podkoscielny is in his sixth season as head coach at Oregon State. Since taking over the Beaver program at the start of the 1996-97 season, Podkoscielny's teams have a dual meet record of 23-32 overall and 2-15 in the Pacific-10.
Podkoscielny, 33, is a nine-time All-American and 2-time Olympian. Prior to coming to OSU in the fall of 1996, Podkoscielny had been an assistant men's and women's coach at Arizona since 1993.
A native of Gdansk, Poland, Podkoscielny was a member of the Arizona swim team from 1988-92 and was one of the fastest distance swimmers in UA history. He was also on the Polish National Team from 1980-92 and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics.
BEAVERS FACE TOP-FLIGHT SCHEDULE: Oregon State will swim one of its highest-caliber dual meet schedules ever this season. The Beavers will meet three teams ranked in the CSCAA preseason coaches poll: No. 9 UCLA, No. 18 Miami and No. 25 Florida State. At the Pacific-10 Championships, the Beavers will face a half-dozen teams ranked in the preseason top 25: No. 1 Stanford, No. 5 Arizona, No. 6 Southern California, No. 7 California, No. 9 UCLA and No. 13 Arizona State.
STEVENS NATATORIUM: Oregon State swims its home meets at Stevens Natatorium on the OSU campus. The Beavers are 2-0 at home in dual meets this season and have an all-time record of 7-3 in the pool.
Stevens Natatorium is adjacent to Dixon Recreation Center, near Gill Coliseum. The pool opened in 1994 but was not outfitted for competition until prior to the 1999-2000 season.
OSU had scheduled its home meets at Corvallis' Osborn Aquatic Center since the community pool opened for the 1979-80 season. A few meets were still held on campus at Langton Pool.
