Robertson Shoots 64 in Husky Golf Victory

Nov. 6, 2001

Palm Desert, CA - The Washington men's golf won its third tournament of the fall season by capturing top honors at The Prestige at Palm Desert contested at the Desert Willow Golf Course. Washington finished the 54-hole championship at 20-under 284. The Huskies were the only team in the field to post an under-par score for all three rounds.

A pair of record setting individual performances powered Washington to the victory.

The Huskies were led by sophomore Brock Mackenzie, who shot 65 and 70 during his final two rounds to tie North Carolina's Dustin Bray for medalist honors. Both players completed play at 13-under 203. Mackenzie's second-round score of 65 tied the old Husky school record for 18 holes of play. Bob Conrad established that mark in 1995 at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis.

Mackenzie's record-tying round did not stay in the Husky record book for long.

Teammate John Robertson shot 64 during the final 18 holes of play to establish a new mark. Robertson finished fourth overall at 8-under 208. He opened the tournament with rounds of 70 and 74. Robertson's previous best collegiate score was a 67 he carded last week at Stanford at The Nelson.

Mackenzie's 54-hole score of 203 tied teammate Gordy Scutt for the lowest tournament score in Washington history. Scutt had set that mark earlier this year at the Idaho Vandal Classic. Mackenzie's previous best 54-hole score was a 208 he shot this season at The Nelson. His previous best 18-hole mark was a 68 that he has recorded several times, including during Monday's first round at The Prestige.

'We played really well,' said Husky first-year coach Matt Thurmond. 'We've been playing well all fall, but have not had any really low scores. All of the sudden, in this tournament, guys were all shooting low.'

Mackenzie held a three-stroke lead over Bray heading into the final 18 holes of play. The second round of the tournament was finished Tuesday morning after darkness forced play to stop Monday evening. Bray shot a 67 during his final 18 holes to catch Mackenzie. Bray opened the tournament with a 65 and shot 71 during the second round.

Conner Robbins finished 10th with a 5-under score of 211. Robbins also turned in a career-best round by shooting 66 during the second round. Joe Ramos was 73rd at 225 and Gordy Scutt was 84th at 229.

The Prestige was Washington's final fall tournament of the season. Mackenzie will compete at the Savanne All-America College Classic in El Paso on Nov. 19-20.
