Wildcat Cross Country to Host West Regional
Nov. 6, 2001
The Meet: The men's and women's cross country teams don't have to travel very far for this weekend's NCAA West Regional. The Wildcats will host the meet on Sat., Nov. 10 at the Randolph Golf Course-North. Thirty-two schools will be represented at the meet. The men's 10K will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 6K following at 10:30 a.m. The top two teams will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. At-large bids will be give out on the following Monday.
Who's going?: The Wildcats were able to enter ten runners on both the men's and women's sides. Seven runners will actually participate in the meet. The men will field a team of: Mark Anderson, Eric Bohn, Mike Cramer, Kevin Engelhardt, Kyle Goklish, Mike Howard, Matt McInvale, Thomas Opio, Tom Prindiville, and Steve Smith. The women's team will be made up of: Kim Bates, Jennifer Burris, Tara Chaplin, Cara Cline, Erin Doherty, Nicole Gurnicz, Beth Hoge, Harisimran Khalsa, Abby Peters, and Andrea Schwartz.
On the men's side: This season has brought upon a lot of adversity for the Arizona men. They have lacked consistency among their top five runners all season. Kyle Goklish, Mark Anderson, and Steve Smith have all occupied the top spot. Mike Cramer, Tom Prindiville, and Matt McInvale have all been a part of the Wildcats' scoring efforts in at least one meet. The Cats will look for consistency in the championship season as they seek another berth to the NCAA Championships.
As for the women: Tara Chaplin has been the dominant leader for the Wildcat women this season. She has been helped by group of runners who run in a very tight pack. Beth Hoge, Erin Doherty, Jennifer Burris, and Kim Bates are constantly in the top five. They consistently finish within seconds of each other. The Arizona women are also helped out by the performances of Nicole Gurnicz, Andrea Schwartz, Cara Cline, and Harisimran Khalsa.
Murray's Musings: 'Everyone looks really good. We had good practices last week, and wek will tone down now for Saturday. Everyone is healthy and ready to go. Our women will probably battle Arizona State for the number two spot. Abby Peters should be a factor, and we will rely on strength from Tara Chaplin. For the men, first or second will be more difficult. Stanford is the overwhelming favorite. Arizona State, Oregon, Portland, and us should battle behind them. We're going for top two and no worse than third. Kyle Goklish and Steve Smith look healthy and should help us out.'
