Women's Basketball Opens With 86-61 Victory In Exhibition

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Behind 22 points from freshman center Kim Gipson, the USC women's basketball team easily defeated 'Love & Basketball' (a local AAU team), 86-61, in its first exhibition of the season on Wednesday (Nov. 7) in the North Gym.
USC had six players finish in double digits, including Gipson's 10-of-13 performance. Senior forward Carmen Krause led on the boards with 10, while Krause and sophomore guard Lauren Smith-Hams posted five assists apiece. Krause also led with three steals.
Former Trojan Tashara Carter ('01) led the visiting team with 15 points.
After opening with a 6-5 lead, the Women of Troy never trailed. The Trojans went on a 15-7 run with five minutes remaining in the half, then increased their lead to 22 (54-32) before entering the break with a 54-35 advantage.
By holding Love & Basketball to 32.0 (8-25) percent shooting in the second half, and hitting 52.0 (13-25) percent of its own, USC rolled to the 86-61 victory over the visiting team.
Sophomores Ebony Hoffman and Aisha Hollans did not play, each serving a one-game suspension earned in the Spring.USC will play its final exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 10, against Team Concept at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center. The Women of Troy open the regular season on the road against St. Joseph's and Tennessee, Nov. 16 and 18.
