CORVALLIS, ORE. - The Oregon State University men's basketball team fell to Athletes-In-Action, 78-70, at Gill Coliseum Thursday in the Beavers' final exhibition game of the season.
Guard Brandon Payton led Oregon State with 18 points, with forward Philip Ricci adding 17 points and 12 rebounds. AIA was led by the game-high 19 points by former Missouri player Derek Grimm. The traveling team from Ohio also received 18 points from former New Orleans player Ronnie Grandison and Warner Southern player John Hall.
'I thought we did some good things tonight, but the problem was we waited 20 minutes to do those things,' OSU head coach Ritchie McKay said. 'Our effort was good, but the team is struggling a little because I haven't set a rotation. I think that's the reason we didn't win the game tonight.'
Oregon State built as much as a six point lead early in the first half, but trailed 43-32 at the break. AIA scored the half's last 12 points to take the advantage into the lockerroom. AIA built the lead to 52-36 early in the second half, before OSU made a furious rally to tie the game at 56-56. However, AIA, scored the next seven points and never trailed for the remainder of the contest.
'AIA made some great shots tonight, they deserve a lot of credit,' McKay added. 'I thought we played pretty solid basketball in the second half, but we didn't get many break. But, you have to make breaks to be a good team.'
Oregon State begins regular season action Nov. 17 at home against Northern Colorado.
