Wrestling Ranked First in Preseason Pac-10 Poll

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State wrestling team enters the 2001-02 season ranked first in the Pac-10 Preseason Poll, while five Sun Devils are ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes.

Senior David Douglas (133), junior Eric Larkin (141), junior Rocky Smart (157) and heavyweight juniors Kellan Fluckiger and Hector Torres open the season as the top wrestlers to contend with in the conference. Douglas, Larkin and Fluckiger each won Pac-10 titles last season.

Also ranked among the top-four Pac-10 wrestlers for ASU are freshman Mike Simpson (No. 4 at 125 pounds), sophomore Nick Frost (No. 4 at 165), senior Curtis Owen (No. 3 at 174) and senior Erik Gladish (No. 2 at 197).

The defending Pac-10 champs are ranked ahead of No. 2 Oregon State, No. 3 Boise State and No. 4 Oregon and No. 5 Cal Poly. Nationally the Sun Devils are ranked ninth by Amateur Wrestling News and 12th by InterMat.

ASU opens the season at the Missouri Open in Columbia, Mo., Sunday, Nov. 18, before hosting its first home dual meet with Pac-10 foe Cal State Fullerton, Sunday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
