Arizona Soccer Edged by Arizona State, 3-2, in Overtime
Nov. 9, 2001
Tucson, Ariz. (Nov. 9) -- Playing its fifth overtime contest of the year, the Arizona women's soccer team was edged, 3-2, by rival Arizona State (10-8-1, 4-4-1 Pac-10) at home in the season finale on Friday night. With 80 points on the year (30 goals, 20 assists), the Cats have set a new school record for single season scoring.
The two teams spent much of the game's first 20 minutes in the midfield, then Wildcat freshman Vanesha Bailey broke loose on the right side and sent a hard shot at ASU goalkeeper Kristin Slater. Slater deflected the shot, but Arizona freshman Candice Wilks was there to collect the rebound and score the first goal of the match at 20:28. The Cats carried that 1-0 edge into halftime.
It didn't take Arizona long in the second half to make the game 2-0. Bailey took yet another hard shot from about 20 yards on the right side. A Sun Devil defender tried to deflect the ball with a header, but it skipped off the side of the player's head and into the goal.
Arizona State stepped up the pressure after that. The Sun Devils sent up a flurry of shots during the 53rd minute, and UA senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti made several spectacular saves. In the 55th minute, ASU's Wendy Ragitsch made a run up the right side and sent the ball to Stephanie Peel, who broke the shutout with a shot that came off Monti's hand. Antoinette Marjanovic then knotted the game at 2-all in the 63rd minute with her bullet from the right side.
Arizona had two more solid scoring chances as the regulation minutes waned. Wildcat senior Tiffany Sabado had a long shot in the 82nd minute that was stopped by Slater, and with just two minutes left, UA freshman Cassie Daniels had a header that just slipped over the bar. The teams took their 2-2 tie into overtime.
Both squads had shots on-goal within the first minute of the overtime period. Arizona State used its second shot of the extra time to score the gamewinner, as Marjanovic sent a corner kick into the box for Patrice Feulner's header at 94:58.
Arizona finishes the 2001 season with 5-12-1 overall and 2-7-0 Pac-10 records. Candice Wilks ended her rookie season as the team's leading scorer with eight goals and three assists (19 points), closely followed by fellow freshman Vanesha Bailey's six goals and five assists (17 points).###
