Men's Soccer Plays UCLA Tough, Falls 1-0
Nov. 9, 2001
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - - Oregon State dropped a 1-0 decision to UCLA in Pacific-10 men's soccer action at Frank W. Marshall Field in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, setting the Beavers back to 5-10-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.
OSU came into the match having won the last two games in the series, including a 1-0 win in Corvallis on Oct. 21.
The game's lone score came in the eighth minute when UCLA's Matt Taylor beat OSU goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer one-on-one after he took an Adolfo Gregorio pass and sent home his fourth goal of the year.
After that, both teams played solid defense, with each teams' back line saving a would-be score midway through the first half.
For the Beavers, Christian vanBlommestein cleared a Chadd Davis shot after Billmeyer had been pulled from the net going after a loose ball. Aaron McHardy also had a shot cleared by UCLA midfielder Brandon Kay when Bruin goalkeeper Zach Wells left the net open on a scramble.
Neither team put together much of a threat after the first half flurry, as the Beavers totaled seven shots on the afternoon to UCLA's 10.
Billmeyer added to his league-leading saves total with five, giving him 88 on the year. The sophomore entered the game ranked 18th in the nation in saves per game with 5.93, and leads the Pac-10.
Although disappointed with the outcome, OSU coach Dana Taylor was encouraged by his teams' play.
'We played very well,' Taylor said. 'The backs played extremely well today, and the midfield played quite stellar as well. Up front, we created opportunities, but we just didn't finish them.
'All in all, it was a good outing, but we did not win. I thought we played well and represented ourselves and Oregon State well.'
OSU is back in action for a final homestand beginning this Friday when they host California at 1 p.m., and then Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m. as well.
