Wrestling Falls To Navy In Season Opener, 22-12

Stanford, CALIF. - Stanford (0-1) fell to the US Naval Academy (2-0) tonight in the season opener at Burnham Pavilion, 22-12. The Midshipmen also defeated UC Davis earlier this afternoon, 26-10.
Junior Justin Walker (Otis Orchards, WA/East Valley), who led Stanford with 25 wins last season, captured the first win of the season with competition starting at the 133 pound division. He handed Mike Simon a 10-4 decision to give the Cardinal a 3-0 lead. Redshirt freshman Matt Gentry (Grant Pass, OR/North Valley) tacked on another decision at 149 pounds, defeating Brett Harman 10-3 to put the Cardinal on top, 6-4. Junior Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights), who recorded 20 wins last year, tallied his first victory at 184 pounds this season over Travis Manion, 13-7. Penson's win put Stanford in striking distance with the meet score at 14-9. Sophomore Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) wrapped up competition for the night with a 6-2 win over Sam Gray at 125 pounds, making the final score Navy 22, Stanford 12.
Stanford returns to action tomorrow Saturday, November 10 at noon in Burnham Pavilion as the Cardinal open Pac-10 competition with a meet against Oregon.
