Nov. 10, 2001
SEATTLE, Wash. - -
The Oregon State women's crew wrapped up a promising fall season with a fine performance at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle on Saturday, with the varsity eight taking fifth in the Open Eight with a time of 17:32.68 on the 2.8-mile Lake Union course.
The Beavers cut 32 seconds off their margin with Washington - one of the nation's fastest boats - from last week when the teams met in Seattle.
The Open Eight featured some of the nation's best crews, including the U.S. National Team, which won the race in 16:54.33, followed by Washington, Stanford, Pennsylvania, and Oregon State. The Beavers finished less than three seconds behind Pennsylvania.
Also turning in great performances were the two OSU third varsity eights, which finished third and fourth. The 'B' boat finished in 19:01.59, while the 'A' boat crossed the line in 19:06.24, six seconds ahead of Washington's boat. The 'B' boat was less than two seconds off the winning pace of the Lake Union Crew's time of 18:59.61.
'The varsity eight rowed a good, solid race,' 11th-year OSU coach Charlie Owen said. 'It was the kind of the race we needed - it's a great way to finish off the fall and go into winter break.
'We weren't concerned with times so much as with going out and rowing a race we could be proud of. It's been a while since the varsity eight has come off the racecourse with everyone in agreement that it was a very good race. It was good for our program.'
The junior varsity eight took third in its race with a time of 18:09.45, finishing behind Washington and Washington State.
OSU won't compete again until March 9, when the Beavers host the University of Victoria in Corvallis.
