Nov. 10, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - It was a perfect start to the Pacific-10 Conference season for the Oregon wrestling team as it defeated UC Davis, 39-9 in the nightcap of an opening day doubleheader, in which the Ducks also defeated Stanford, 29-4.
In all, Oregon won 17 of 20 matches in its first two Pac-10 duals to improve to 2-0 overall, 2-0 Pac-10. Freshman Shane Webster, starting at 174, finished the day with two victories to start his first collegiate season 2-0. Oregon's other newcomer, Elias Soto, finished the day 1-1, falling 14-5 to Stanford's Harold Penson, before defeating Bret Hallenbeck of Davis, 9-2.
Oregon senior Eugene Harris made the switch to 165 this season and easily defeated John Garfinkel of Stanford by major decision, 16-5. Harris then lost a close double overtime decision, 2-1 to Burt Pierson of Davis.
'We wrestled hard in all areas tonight and I'm pleased with that,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'We gave up only three takedowns against Davis and earlier we had 27 more takedowns against Stanford, wo we're dominating on our feet.'
'If we are able to continue to improve and wrestle well, we're going to put ourselves in a position where we can attain our goals,' Kearney said.
