Nov. 11, 2001
The Arizona women's basketball team cruised to an 88-65 exhibition victory over the NWBL USA Elite team in front of 1053 at McKale Center on Sunday afternoon.
Fueled by an 11-for-13 performance from the free throw line, senior forward Elizabeth Pickney lead the way for the Wildcats with a game-high 29 points. Fellow senior LaKeisha Taylor added 21 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 10-for-13 from the floor. Sophomore guard Aimee Grzyb also contributed with 10 points and a game-high nine assists.
'We know that they (Taylor and Pickney) are very good post players, as they showed today with a combined 50 points and 25 rebounds,' said Arizona head coach Joan Bonvicini. 'We need more consistency from our perimeter players, although Aimee (Grzyb) had nine assists today, which is good.'
The Wildcats sprinted to an early 19-0 lead, holding the NWBL team scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. The Wildcat offense shot an impressive 20-for-41 from the floor in the first half and went into halftime with a 47-20 lead.
'We played great early on today, we played a great first half,' said Bonvicini. 'I thought that we let down on defense a little in the second half and we got sloppy. Fortunately, it didn't effect the outcome of the game.'
After a slow start, NWBL USA Elite managed to out-score the Wildcats, 45-41, in the second half, shooting 17-of-36 from the field. The NWBL USA Elite, a team composed of former collegiate and current NWBL players, was lead by Angela Blakely with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Wildcats seemed to have their way with the NWBL squad, by forcing 26 turnovers and out-rebounding their opponent, 51-39.
After garnering a pair of wins during exhibition play, Arizona will open the regular-season action against Pepperdine on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. in the McKale Center.
'The real test starts at home next week with Pepperdine,' said Bonvicini. 'They're going to be quick, they felt as though they should have won here last year, so it will be a good game.'
