Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker In Regular Season Finale
Nov. 11, 2001
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Laura Schott's goal at 117:54 was the game-winner Sunday as the California Golden Bears defeated the USC Trojans, 1-0, in Pac-10 Conference action. It was the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Women of Troy battled despite being a player down for the entire overtime after freshman Megan Kakadelas received a red card in the 81st minute. Kakadelas must sit out the Trojans' first-round game in the NCAA Tournament. USC was also without the services of sophomore Megan Abbamonto after she suffered a concussion in the first half. Abbamonto is expected to return for post-season action.
USC finishes the regular season with a 10-6-2 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Pac-10 with a 5-3-1 mark.
Injuries have taken its toll on the team heading into the post-season as USC will be without Kim Abbamonto, Nikki Goza, Amanda Roach, Shannon Cross and Kakadelas (first-round only due to red card). There is a slight chance that Roach and Cross could play again, depending on how far USC advances.
The NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament bracket will be announced Monday at noon (Pacific time) on selected FOX Sports Net regional channels.
