Women's Tennis Finishes Strong at Final Day of Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team added two more victories Sunday to their weekend total of 19, at day three of the Duck Classic Invitational
In singles, Oregon senior Valerie Young defeated New Mexico's Maria Ruiz-Fabrega, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). In doubles action, the Ducks' tandem of freshman Courtney Nagle and junior Monika Gieczys put away Tulsa's team of Alicia Pillay and Jana Sedivec, 8-5.
In all, the Ducks won 18 singles and one doubles match during the invitational which also includes players from Tulsa, New Mexico and Portland. Oregon was able to win 17 out of 21 singles matches during the weekend.
'Our kids are as competitive as I've ever seen, fifth-year Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. They are confident and they expect to win when they step on the court. This is our first tournament here [at the student tennis center], and it's really nice playing in this facility.
Up next the Ducks travel to take on Portland, in Portland, Oregon on January 17, 2002.
