Comments From Bibby Before Opener

Henry Bibby - Nov. 12, 2001
(regarding Wyoming): 'We know they are very good. It's the same team we played a few years ago in Wyoming. They have two big kids up front that could pose problems for us. Josh Davis is a very good athlete. He's big and shoots the ball well. As a team, they're much better than people might think.
(regarding possible starting lineups): 'We haven't come out with our lineup yet. Going with Errick Craven is one option, but I haven't totally sold myself on that yet. We've still got to see where the guys fit in for the first three or four games. The preseason is to prepare for the Pac-10 and we're trying to get the new guys in a position to help the team.
'We need guys like Sam Clancy, David Bluthenthal and Brandon Granville to play with the kind of intensity that they finished with last year. I know it's early, but for us to be where we expect to be, those guys have to play better. They haven't done that yet. I haven't seen the urgency in their games. You can't wait until the games start.
(regarding impressions of the newcomers besides Errick Craven): 'Jerry Dupree has really played well at times. Nick Curtis has come on as of late and has really rebounded the ball well. He's really surprised some guys with his effort. Rory O'Neil has been impressive at times shooting the ball and Derrick Craven has been a big surprise. All five guys have been a pleasant surprise. Maybe I'm not seeing the kind of play out of our seniors that I want because the new guys are really pushing them. Last year, the starting five were really standouts. No one compared. Maybe the players we have in are much better. Maybe the upperclassmen aren't standing out because the competition is better.
(regarding the possibility of going deep into his bench during games): 'I haven't coached like that in a long time. I haven't done it in the past because we haven't had the talent. This year we could do it. But it will take me a long time before I start thinking that I need to take Sam out of a game. I might go a little longer with a guy like Brandon even if he's not playing well because he played here for four years and I know what he's capable of.
(regarding Desmon Farmer): 'He's always been a pretty good defensive player. Sometimes he goes too fast, but he's a young kid. He's got so much better from last year to this year, it's unbelievable. He's stronger, he's getting to the basket. He's more confident. He's better overall. That's what happens with better players. You'll see the ups and downs but Desmon will eventually be as consistent as Sam. He's still out of control at times. But he's getting better and understands the game better.
